CLINICS vs. CLASSES

PHILOSOPHY: Our goal is to make getting into Long Range and improving a manageable, affordable, and accessible process.  We also believe that learning is accelerated in bite size doses that can be experienced, then practiced on your own.  Our goal is to meet you where you are in the process — whether you are a brand new LR shooter needing to get your rifle, ballistics and fundamentals of shooting — or you are an experienced competitor looking to perfect and improve skills to break through to your next level of performance.

Sometime people want to enter the sport or improve skills, but the time commitment and expense of a 2-3 day course (often requiring travel and hotels) is just too much.  We don’t want that to hold you back from entering, enjoying, or progressing.

Lastly, we want to teach you how to progress on your own!  We clearly explain how to assess your own skills, where the improvement is needed, and what to practice on your own.  And we are accessible to answer your skills and training questions outside of paying for a class with our FREE Zoom clinics covering LR shooting topics.

There is absolutely a place for 2-3 day courses — When you are ready for the time and expense commitment, a 2-3 day class gives you focused training and lots of reps.  And sometimes those classes can feel like drinking from a fire hose with how much knowledge they provide.  Bring that knowledge to our clinics and we can help you prioritize all that new knowledge to make progress through your own practice.  Your SoCal LR Club coaches have taken many of these classes from places like MaxOrdinate, Change of Behavior, Tactical Hyve, Modern Day Sniper, Gunwerks, etc.  And with that knowledge and a ton of competition experience they are there to help you make progress.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Group 1 – Newer Shooters

  • Rifle set-up is key to building skills correctly and quickly.  So we get this accomplished at the beginning of the session to make the rest of the day go smoothly for the shooter.  This almost always means we are removing and resetting your scope to the ideal position for each shooter.  We will explain why the correct set-up leads to better and more consistent results, and key steps for the shooter to do this on their own in the future.
  • Shooting Fundamentals – We explain, demonstrate, and help you with the key fundamentals of that ensure you can get the most accurate and consistent results from your shooting.  This starts with the prone position.
  • Zeroing the rifle at 100 yards – While this is a very basic function, we explain the key aspects of zeroing to help ensure a consistent result. During this time we also get a muzzle velocity for your rifle and ammo.
  • Ballistic App – We help you set-up the ballistic app on your phone (or if you already have a Kestrel type device).  We explain which inputs have the most effect on an accurate ballistic solution, and which app inputs have minimal effect.
  • Validate ballistics – We shoot out to longer ranges to validate that your ballistics are giving you accurate solutions.
  • Application of All the Above – Then we do some multi-target engagements, and do a short intro to the fundamentals of positional shooting off of barricades and props which would be applicable to hunting or match type shooting.

GROUP 2 – Experienced Shooters  (Meaning you already have the above accomplished)

  • Zero period – Still reviewing the group 1 skills with you to ensure consistent shooting results.
  • Positional Shooting – Positional shooting practice for consistency and speed (efficiency) to improve match and hunting skills.
  • Spotting Impacts – This is a key skill in match or hunting shooting.  With good and consistent fundamentals you should be able to spot your hits and misses in order to be able to make adjustments to follow-up shots.  This is a key focus of our practice sessions.  There are some key elements to this skill – having a good natural point of aim (NPA), understanding how to see and interpret your impacts accurately, etc.  What your reticle movement can tell you about how to improve your positional fundamentals to improve your shot spotting.
  • Match stage practice – Engaging multiple targets from multiple positions.
  • How to improve your consistency and speed (efficiency).

GROUP 3 – Experienced with match shooting — we focus on stage prep and strategy, positional shooting skills, and practice stages.

GEAR:

RIFLE (bolt action or semi-auto) that is capable of shooting 1.5 MOA group minimum, preferably sub-1 MOA.  But that is the point of the clinic, we will help you evaluate the capability of your rifle.

SCOPE – with a minimum of 10x magnification, ideally 18-25x magnification.  With an elevation turret that can be dialed without removing the cap.  Ideally with a reticle that has subtensions to help hold left or right for wind.

BALLISTIC APP: You will need a ballistics app to set up for your rifle.  We recommend GeoBallistics as a first app to get.  Or Applied Ballistics. Please download app before the class and try to set up your information. You will need to know:

>Bullet type – you can usually select the specific bullet from the app’s bullet library

>Muzzle Velocity – we can get this at the range

>Scope height over bore – measure from center of bolt to middle of scope

>Barrel Twist Rate – If you don’t know it for sure, we can guestimate it and it will be close enough for the class.

BIPOD – to help shoot in the prone position.  Rear SUPPORT BAG, shooting mat.

EYE and EAR protection – if you don’t have that, we do have limited loaners available.

We have loaner equipment (bipod, support bag, mat)  if you don’t have all the above.  Please let us know what you will need to borrow for the class.

Other gear that is useful if you have it:

Binos – for locating targets, spotting for others, etc.

Tripod – for bino support when standing

Rangefinder – to range targets

Tools specific to your rifle or scope

Hat, suncreen, water and snacks, etc.

If you don’t have these, you will be able to use ours during the class.

LOANER RIFLE INFO – We have rifles you can use for a class or even to try a match.  We also have gear — bipods, support bags, shooting mats, tripods, and binos.  Ranging will be done by the trainers if you do not have your own rangefinder.

Howa 6.5 Creedmoor with Vortex Strike Eagle scope – $50 – (2) available

Custom 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action competition rifle with ZCO scope – $65

Ammo – Rifles are set-up for Hornady American Gunner 140gr BTHP Match ammo.  We can provide ammo for the session for $1.35 per round = 50 rounds = $67.50  We recommend this same ammo if you want to bring your own so that the ballistics do not have to be updated for a new ammo.

Custom .223 bolt action competition rifle with Nightforce Scope- $50
Custom .223 gas gun competition rifle with Nightforce Scope – $50

Ammo: Rifles are set-up for Trace Ammo 77gr BTHP match ammo.  We can provide ammo for the session for $.90 per round = 50 rounds = $45.00  We recommend this so that the ballistics do not have to be updated for a new ammo.  But you you prefer to bring ammo, we request that it be 75gr or 77gr match ammo – NOT 55gr bulk “ball” ammo.  Match ammo is key to these guns performing well in longer range precision engagements.
